The (abridged) story so far....
The outcome of our meeting with the President was largely that he did not foresee our campaign being a success. He questioned the reasons for boycotting Arms companies (don't forget, BAE make nice planes) and mentioned that his past employment at the DTI had involved granting weapons export licenses. The college has a policy not to reveal its investments (even to its different Financial Advisors). It likes to 'play its cards close to its chest' because it has market competitors?!
Students are not considered significant stakeholders, because we have not yet donated vast amounts as alumni.
He did however say we were free to make an application for information based on the freedom of information act.
In the wake of this, our last meeting focussed on how to equip ourselves for the negotiations to come.
We are researching:
- our rights as occupants under the European Commission's Human Rights Charter
- freedom of information act (uni-wide and nationally)
- The obligations the college has (or will have under the new legislation next year) according to the charities act
- the recommendations of a researcher for the Lib Dem Education Spokesman
Future plans:
- Get in touch with our MP - draw his attention to the Early Day Motion Edinburgh got submitted
- NEXT TERM - Raise visibility of the campaign in college
- get ratified as a JCR sub-committee to yield more weight with the SCR and establish the group on a long term basis
