Oriel JCR Transparency Motion Overwhelmingly Passed

The following motion was passed by the Oriel JCR on Sunday 14th November 2004 (3rd JCR meeting of the term, 6th Wk)

This JCR Notes that:

• Oriel College currently has around £50 million invested in various ways
• Details of college investments are not easily available or transparent
• 75% of JCR members responding to an online survey agreed or strongly agreed with the statement “Information on the investments held by Oriel College should be transparent and open”
• We will probably all receive letters from the college for the rest of our lives asking us to donate money to them.

This JCR Believes:

• Details of the funds and companies that Oriel College invests in should be open and transparent, with information on investments published annually and available to students and alumni on request.

This JCR Resolves

• To mandate the JCR President to request at JLC and through a letter to the relevant college officers that the college develops and puts in place a policy to make information on its investments open and transparent in line with the beliefs above.
